Welcome to the Fairbanks Local Contest

Important Dates & Times

The 22nd Annual Fairbanks History Day, will take place February 10 – 14, 2020.

Please take time to review the supporting materials found on both the Alaska Humanities Forum and National History Day websites Don’t be overwhelmed! These websites will provide you and your students with the tips and guidance you need to build a great project for our local, state and national competitions.

The theme this year is “Breaking Barriers.” A detailed discussion on the theme is available at https://www.nhd.org/breaking-barriers-history, including a wonderful video feature with  the historian and award-winning documentarian, Ken Burns.

Looking for inspiration? A diverse array of project ideas and useful research tools are also available on this website.  You will find that this year’s theme is broad enough to incorporate just about any topic your student finds inspiring and interesting. The 2020 NHD theme narrative, booklet, graphic organizer and state competition manual are available online at fairbankshistoryday.org. These items are also available on the Alaska Humanities Forum website listed above.

We will follow the same online submission format this year. Links for project submissions will be made available by January 1, 2020. Projects may be submitted beginning January 14th, 2020. The deadline for all submissions is January 31, 2020. No late submissions will be accepted.

Please note the following changes:
In an effort to streamline website submissions, National History Day has released NHDWebCentral - the new website creation tool. No more Weebly! If your students are planning to make websites this year, please review this important tutorial: https://www.nhd.org/nhdwebcentral

A quick note on our venue:
Recently, the Pioneer Park Civic Center was deemed unsafe for public use. We are working quickly to find a new home for Fairbanks History Day that is accessible to all. I hope to have an updated venue contracted before the end of the year. Please check www.fairbankshistoryday.org for updates in early January.

As always, you may contact me with any questions about Fairbanks History Day. Thank you all for your efforts and dedication to our mission, “to promote the study and appreciation of history”.

                                                                Warmest Regards,

                                                                   Rebecca Heaton
